Everything We Know About The Legend Of Zelda Movie

The long-anticipated wish of fans has finally come to fruition, as a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda video game is officially in active development at Nintendo. Shigeru Miyamoto, the visionary creator of this iconic franchise, shared this exciting revelation on November 8th. From the director of The Labyrinth

Miyamoto made the project official via a press release on Nintendo's website, and provided some interesting information: "I've been working on The Legend of Zelda live-action film for several years now with Avi Arad, who has produced many successful films".

He continues: "I asked Avi to produce the film with me, and we've now officially started development with Nintendo, which is heavily involved in the production. It will take some time, but I hope you're looking forward to seeing it.

Producer of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy and the first X-Men films, as well as the recent Uncharted and Spider-Man: New Generation movies, Avi Arad is no stranger to big licenses. However, he is also responsible for the dubious Morbius, Venom and Ghost in the Shell. The film is co-produced by Nintendo and Sony Pictures, which will also handle theatrical distribution.

The adaptation is written by Derek Connolly (Jurassic World, Kong: Skull Island) and will be directed by Wes Ball, already behind the Labyrinth trilogy and the forthcoming Planet of the Apes: The New Kingdom.

Born in 1986, The Legend of Zelda franchise is one of the most popular in video game history, with 26 official titles, including the famous Ocarina of Time and Breath of the Wild. It recounts the adventures of the hero Link, who must free the kingdom of Hyrule and Princess Zelda from the threat of the terrible Ganon.

A live action adaptation?

Another important piece of information is that the film will be a live-action adaptation. While no information has yet been released on a potential cast, this indicates a direction away from the 3D-animated world of the recent Super Mario Bros. feature film.

While video game adaptation has long been synonymous with fiasco, the situation has changed over the last few years, and films such as Mortal Kombat, Sonic and Uncharted have been relatively well received by critics, and above all, have been major box-office successes. Released last March, Super Mario Bros, the film is even one of the box-office hits of 2023, taking in $1.36 billion worldwide.

Nintendo's universe continues to expand on cinema and TV screens. A sequel to the Super Mario Bros movie is undoubtedly already in the pipeline, and last year the Japanese firm created its own animation studio to handle future adaptations of its licenses, called Nintendo Pictures. Enough to delight gamers... and others.
